"I became a sailor in the U. S. Navy because I had two older brothers who were in the Army. I wanted no part of the long walks in the mud and sleeping on the ground. I read that the Navy was taking some draftees, so I volunteered for the draft and asked for the Navy. The only battles that I was in were on liberty. The first time I went to sea we hit a bad storm, which tore a torpedo loose on the 01 deck that ripped off a gun tub, and tore a big hole in the overhead of the Chiefs quarters. I asked a Chief if this was a bad storm or if it was like this all the time. He told me that he had been in for 20 years and had never seen a storm this bad. Then I got scared. I served all of my time in the Navy after boot camp on the USS Savage. I have enjoyed the reunions more than the time I served. I was discharged as an Electricians Mate 3rd class. The best memories I have of my time in Seattle are the weekends spent with Bill Pope and Vic Belaire and their families."
