758th AC & W Squadron
Neah Bay, Washington
Orders #141
23 September, 1955
"In 1955 I was an A1C radar operator stationed at the 758th AC&W Sq, Neah Bay in western Washington State. I received TDY orders to report NLT 2400 PST 25 Sep 55 to the commander of USS Savage at pier 91 in Seattle for appox. 20 days cross training. It is one of the memorable experiences of my military career. As it turned out I was the only non-navy man on board and was pretty much on my own. I reported to CIC each morning and involved myself with radar search. I still possess a copy of the Plan of the Day dated 11 Oct 1955 signed by the XO, Lt. T.R. Fitzgerald. The plan called for rendezvous with Tractor plane at 0930 for Z-4-G AA firing excerise. At 1030 we were to depart for Seattle to arrive about 0900 the following morning. The movie for that night was "Crazy Legs" with Lloyd Nolan.
I remember one seaman for that TDY by the name of [Charles H. Broower.] I still have my Savage baseball cap altho it is in poor condition today. My memories of that period of my life will always be cherished." [Bob has now had his old baseball cap replaced.]
