"In the radio shack, we worked in shifts of four hours on and eight hours off. Most everything we copied was in code of blocks of five letters each. Once in a great while, some news or a message would come over in plain language. On 13 April, 1945, I copied this message that began... 'I have the sad duty to announce to the Naval Service the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.' We called the Skipper immediately and soon it was announced on the PA System.
